If you think of coaching as getting a pat on the back and gentle advice, then Jakob’s methods are not for you. If results are what you’re after, this is what you’re looking for! NLP Coach and Pro Cagefighter Jakob “the Striking Viking” Lvstad helps both pro athletes and business people reach the top of their game through his All Confidence program (AllConfidence.com). Are you ready to be one of them?

Jakob LA vstad is a full contact cage fighter, and one who apparently is very good at what he does. This is a world that few of us will ever experience directly. However Jakob is not simply some extraordinarily quick, balanced, strong, aggressive fighter, he has worked out, with a little help from his friends, that his ability to perform in this extreme environment is a function of a lot more than the obvious advanced physical requirements and special set of skills that are a prerequisite in the cage. This makes his lively, sometimes outrageous, narrative of his adventures particularly interesting. While there is much in what Jakob writes that I would challenge – even the title Going Mental contains what is for me the entirely objectionable Cartesian split that much the work that I have done in creating and developing NLP has designed to challenge. Consider, however the context – while I could well be wrong, I doubt that many of the professional full contact fighters concern themselves about such philosophical issues as the possibility of objectivity, the distinction between reality and experience, the issue of whether life has meaning or is it that we simply create the meaning in our lives. Jakob does. And this makes for a lively insight into this very special world. For years, psychologists have attempted to classify Neuro Linguistic Programming as a part of psychology, and I have refused this classification. Psychology has as its focus, the AVERAGE performance of various populations – who gives a damn about average performance; NLP has as its focus the extraordinary, the genius, in whatever field of endeavor. Here is a narrative about its consequences embodied in a cage fighter – have a look – the patterns are perfectly applicable to what you do as well as what Jakob does. John Grinder, co-creator of NLP

    Book Description

Training Within Industry is the structural genesis of the Lean Manufacturing and the heart of kaizen, the practice of small continuous improvements. Within this book you will discover how to:

Strengthen the Managerial Organization Select Supervisors and keep them informed of their responsibilities Prepare and train instructors on how to train new How to get continuous results

From new employees to new supervisors, the T. W. I. Bulletin Series is packed with ideas, concepts, and methods that will produce results. The standardization of processes and of training methods, the integration of production line employees into setting standards, and the recognition that training is never finished are all hallmarks of T. W. I. that would later find themselves as hallmarks of the Toyota Production System.

In many organizations, management is the biggest obstacle to successful Agile development. Unfortunately, reliable guidance on Agile management has been scarce indeed. Now, leading Agile manager Jurgen Appelo fills that gap, introducing a realistic approach to leading, managing, and growing your Agile team or organization.

Writing for current managers and developers moving into management, Appelo shares insights that are grounded in modern complex systems theory, reflecting the intense complexity of modern software development. Appelo’s Management 3.0 model recognizes that today’s organizations are living, networked systems; and that management is primarily about people and relationships.

Management 3.0 doesn’t offer mere checklists or prescriptions to follow slavishly; rather, it deepens your understanding of how organizations and Agile teams work and gives you tools to solve your own problems. Drawing on his extensive experience as an Agile manager, the author identifies the most important practices of Agile management and helps you improve each of them.

Coverage includes

• Getting beyond “Management 1.0” control and “Management 2.0” fads

• Understanding how complexity affects your organization

• Keeping your people active, creative, innovative, and motivated

• Giving teams the care and authority they need to grow on their own

• Defining boundaries so teams can succeed in alignment with business goals

• Sowing the seeds for a culture of software craftsmanship

• Crafting an organizational network that promotes success

• Implementing continuous improvement that actually works

Thoroughly pragmatic–and never trendy–Jurgen Appelo’s Management 3.0 helps you bring greater agility to any software organization, team, or project.

“ I don’t care for cookbooks, as in ‘5 steps to success at whatever.’ I like books that urge you to think–that present new ideas and get mental juices flowing. Jurgen’s book is in this latter category; it asks us to think about leading and managing as a complex undertaking–especially in today’s turbulent world. Management 3.0 offers managers involved in agile/lean transformations a thought-provoking guide how they themselves can ‘become’ agile.”

– Jim Highsmith, Executive Consultant, ThoughtWorks, Inc., www.jimhighsmith.com, Author of Agile Project Management

“ An up-to-the-minute, relevant round-up of research and practice on complexity and management, cogently summarized and engagingly presented.”

–David Harvey, Independent Consultant, Teams and Technology

“ Management 3.0 is an excellent book introducing agile to management. I’ve not seen any book that comes near to what this book offers for managers of agile teams. It’s not only a must read, it’s a must share.”

–Olav Maassen, Xebia

“ If you want hard fast rules like ‘if x happens, do y to fix it’ forget this book. Actually forget about a management career. But if you want tons of ideas on how to make the work of your team more productive and thereby more fun and thereby more productive and thereby more fun and…read this book! You will get a head start on this vicious circle along with a strong reasoning on why the concepts work.”

–Jens Schauder, Software Developer, LINEAS

“ There are a number of books on managing Agile projects and transitioning from being a Project Manager to working in an Agile setting. However, there isn’t much on being a manager in an Agile setting. This book fills that gap, but actually addresses being an effective manager in any situation. The breadth of research done and presented as background to the actual concrete advice adds a whole other element to the book. And all this while writing in an entertaining style as well.”

–Scott Duncan, Agile Coach/Trainer, Agile Software Qualities

“ Don’t get tricked by the word ‘Agile’ used in the subtitle. The book isn’t really about Agile; it is about healthy, sensible and down-to-earth management. Something, which is still pretty uncommon.”

–Pawel Brodzinski, Software Project Management

“ When I first met Jurgen and learned he was writing a book based on complexity theory, I thought, ‘That sounds good, but I’ll never understand it.’ Books with words like entropy, chaos theory, and thermodynamics tend to scare me. In fact, not only did I find Management 3.0 accessible and easy to understand, I can [also] apply the information immediately, in a practical way. It makes sense that software teams are complex adaptive systems, and a relief to learn how to apply these ideas to help our teams do the best work possible. This book will help you whether you’re a manager or a member of a software team”.

–Lisa Crispin, Agile Tester, ePlan Services, Inc., author of Agile Testing

“ This book is an important read for managers who want to move beyond ‘managing by hope’ and understand the underpinning of trust, motivation, and the complexity that exists in nearly every team out there.”

–Cory Foy, Senior Consultant, Net Objectives

“ This book is a very accessible compendium of team management practices based on scientific research. It’s not only the tremendous value in each page of this book, but also Jurgen’s typical sense of humor that turns this book into a pleasant read.”

–Ruud Cox, Test Manager, Improve Quality Services

“ The very heart of software development is to get people to recognize they are in a complex system that should be managed accordingly. Management 3.0 addresses both the recognition and the concomitant transformative aspects. By so doing, Jurgen Appelo provides a bridge between theory and practice that has so far been considered too far away.”

– Israel Gat, Founder, The Agile Executive, author of The Concise Executive Guide to Agile

“ If you really want to know about Agile management, read Jurgen’s book. He explains why looking for results is key to involving the team and for a great outcome. As Jurgen says, management is not simple and this book explains why. With humor and pragmatism, Jurgen shows you how you can think about management.”

– Johanna Rothman, Consultant, Rothman Consulting Group, Inc., author of Manage It!

“ In this book, Jurgen does a great job of explaining the science behind complexity and how Agile management methods have arisen from the need to manage in complex, dynamic, and unpredictable circumstances. If you’re leading Agile development teams and interested in developing your management skills, this book is a must-read.”

–Kelly Waters, Blogger, Agile Development Made Easy!

“ I firmly believe that Management 3.0 will become the ‘Bible’ of Agile management books in the decade ahead.”

– Ed Yourdon, IT Management/Software Consultant, Nodruoy, Inc., author of Death March

“ This book is not written for those who want a quick fix. This book is written for serious students who have a passion and love for management. This book is written for management craftsmen.”

–Robert C. Martin, Owner, ObjectMentor, Inc., author of Clean Code

“ Every 21st century Agile manager needs to read Jurgen Appelo’s Management 3.0. With an engaging and accessible style, Appelo outlines current theories from complexity science, management, leadership, and social systems [and] then pulls them all together with practical examples. Then he throws in reflective questions to assist managers in applying it all to their current situations. Whenever I work with a manager, executive, or leadership team, I’ll recommend this book.”

– Diana Larsen, Consultant, FutureWorks Consulting LLC, co-author of Agile Retrospectives

“ Jurgen takes his readers on a wide-ranging romp through system theory, complexity theory, management theory–and distills it for practical application. His book will help managers think about their work differently and expand their options for effective action in the workplace.”

– Esther Derby, Consultant, Esther Derby Associates, Inc., co-author of Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management

“ Jurgen managed to write a book that links the tons of books he has read. Although there were a few moment I did not agree with him, I loved the way this book challenged my thinking. This is the perfect book if you want to know how to create your own answers in this complex world.”

–Yves Hanoulle, Agile Coach, PairCoaching.net

“ Management 3.0 brings together the best thinking in the fields of complex adaptive systems, Agile management, and Lean product delivery to suggest a pragmatic framework for effective management in the 21st century. To be successful in the face of rapidly changing market conditions, we must create organizations that enable our people to adapt, with a minimal amount of oversight and direction. Management 3.0 gives us a roadmap for leading teams in the face of profound uncertainty. Jurgen has made a significant contribution to the field of Agile management and leadership.”

–Mike Cottmeyer, Agile Coach, LeadingAgile

“ Too many Agile practitioners ignore the realities of the real world. But in the real world Agile projects must be managed, directed, and moved forward.

This book is designed to assist newly appointed police supervisors in developing a leadership style that is effective in today’s ever changing culture. The lessons learned are equally applicable to those existing supervisors who wish to sharpen their leadership skills and abilities within their departments. The principles and examples presented have been the basis for both a college-level course on leadership and a ten year ongoing seminar series attended by over a thousand police supervisors. Through constant feedback, candid discussion and follow-up contacts, the authors address the most common problems facing a supervisor, from leadership basics, stress management, media relations, communication and motivation to goal setting and legal issues. The issues are presented in a conversational style with suggested approaches and examples of what works and what doesn’t (and why). The benefits gained include better leaders, increased officer competency, and ultimately, a more professional department.

Crisis Intervention: Contemporary Issues for On-Site Interveners

This comprehensive manual has been written for preservice and in-service crisis interveners and all frontline workers in criminal justice and social services who come into contact with people who believe that their lives are falling apart. This edition has been revised and updated to reflect the latest developments in the field. Although the book primarily focuses on criminal justice agents, especially the police, the principles and guidelines presented are applicable in a number of settings. Unlike other books about crisis intervention, this book deals extensively with the special considerations involved in intervening in nonsecure field settings. Step-by-step procedures, numerous examples, and role plays teach readers how to intervene in crises involving victims of crime, intimate partner violence, child abuse and neglect, elder maltreatment, suicide, and school violence. The intervener is also provided with information on self assessment and coping with the stresses of frontline work. New to this edition is a statement of objectives at the beginning of each chapter, a summary at the end of each chapter, a set of learning activities for each chapter, and appendices which include useful World Wide Web sites, guidelines and scenarios for role plays, and a sample course outline for instructors. –This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is a thoroughly updated edition of Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory, the standard text for doctoral students and researchers on the theory of asset pricing and portfolio selection in multiperiod settings under uncertainty. The asset pricing results are based on the three increasingly restrictive assumptions: absence of arbitrage, single-agent optimality, and equilibrium. These results are unified with two key concepts, state prices and martingales. Technicalities are given relatively little emphasis, so as to draw connections between these concepts and to make plain the similarities between discrete and continuous-time models.

Readers will be particularly intrigued by this latest edition’s most significant new feature: a chapter on corporate securities that offers alternative approaches to the valuation of corporate debt. Also, while much of the continuous-time portion of the theory is based on Brownian motion, this third edition introduces jumps–for example, those associated with Poisson arrivals–in order to accommodate surprise events such as bond defaults. Applications include term-structure models, derivative valuation, and hedging methods. Numerical methods covered include Monte Carlo simulation and finite-difference solutions for partial differential equations. Each chapter provides extensive problem exercises and notes to the literature. A system of appendixes reviews the necessary mathematical concepts. And references have been updated throughout. With this new edition, Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory remains at the head of the field.

This is an important addition to the set of text/reference books on asset pricing theory. It will, if it has not already, become the standard text for the second Ph.D. course in security markets. Its treatment of contingent claim valuation, in particular, is unrivaled in its breadth and coherence. — Journal of Economic Literature

This book is the first in a new three-volume set that brings the management, guidance, and development of kaizen teian systems into perfect focus.
This first volume explains many aspects of running a proposal program on a day-to-day basis and provides cartoon examples of successful kaizen teian programs in four major Japanese organizations. This concise reference outlines the policies that support a “bottom-up” system of innovation and defines the three main objectives of kaizen teian: to build participation, develop individuals’ skills, and achieve higher profits.

Toyota Kaizen Methods: Six Steps to Improvement focuses on the skills and techniques practiced inside Toyota Motor Corporation during the past decades. This workbook focuses on the actual training course concepts and methods used by Toyota to develop employee skill level, a core element of Toyotas success. It is not a book about holding Western-style five-day Kaizen events, which were in reality quite rare during the development of Toyotas production system and are virtually nonexistent today inside Toyota.
Conversational and accessible, this Second Edition of Bruce J. Avolio’s groundbreaking book uses the full range leadership development model as an organizing framework and shows how it can be directly applied to improving leadership at the individual, team, and organizational levels. Filled with examples that show how the full range model comes to life in today’s global world, Full Range Leadership Development, Second Edition, demonstrates how people, timing, resources, the context of interaction, and expected results in performance and motivation all contribute to effective leadership.

Over the last decade, the full range model has become the most researched model in the leadership literature-and the most validated-and has been proven to be an accurate guide for developing exemplary leadership in diverse cultures, organizations, and leadership positions. The new edition shows how the process of leadership development is linked to validation and how the process of validation informs accelerated leadership development.

Such recent new trends as flextime, telecommting, 360-degree feedback, the flattening of hierarchies, and the increased use of temps and contract workers present tough new challenges for supervisors in every field. This timely, completely revised and updated edition of Ferdinand Fourniess classic management coaching “bible” shows you proven ways to get workers to perform at the highest level while eliminating the self-destructive kinds of behaviors that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
In this book, youll be taught specific face-to-face interventions you can use to enhance performance in every kind of workplace situation–from sales to creative brainstorming. There are also interventions uniquely suited to resolving problems ranging from low productivity to absenteeism to conflicts between individuals. Youll learn precisely what to say and do so that each person you supervise will want to give you his or her best work–even when that person was previously thought to be a “problem employee.” Packed with brand-new case studies from Fourniess latest research into the dynamics of the modern workplace, this classic guide takes all the guesswork out of becoming the kind of inspired, “hands-on” manager that every company today is looking for!

Firms with superior IT governance have more than 25% higher profits than firms with poor governance given the same strategic objectives. These top performers have custom designed IT governance for their strategies. Just as corporate governance aims to ensure quality decisions about all corporate assets, IT governance links IT decisions with company objectives and monitors performance and accountability.
